I have a 1988 plymouth reliant. i need to know if my AC, just needs to be charged or totally fixed. help pleas

i dont know if the AC just sucks in it because when i turn it on it comes out cool, it would be better to have the windows open basicly. i think i have to charge it but is there any other reason it wouldnt work?
