What does it usually mean when a guy uses the word "hypothetically" lol?

I know what the word means, but I've noticed that my ex bf usually means the opposite when he uses it (if that makes any sense.) For instance, when we broke up he said "(Hypothetically) If I broke up with you, would you hate me forever?" I replied "no", the next minute he breaks up with me. Last night he IMs me "(Hypothetically) if I wanted to get back together with you, would you say yes, or say no, realize I was a big mistake, and run the other way?"
